Martin J. Neville, 1941-2020

          Neville Peterson LLP is sad to announce the passing of Martin J. Neville, a founding partner whose name graces our firm, on August 11, 2020. Marty died peacefully at home surrounded by family.

            Born on April 13, 1941, Marty grew up in New York City, attending St. Francis Preparatory high school, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Fordham University before attaining his law degree from Fordham University School of Law. He served in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General Corps before embarking on a long and illustrious legal career.

            Marty specialized in the regulation of toxic and hazardous materials, product liability and toxicity, antitrust and international trade. He was counsel to numerous trade associations and an expert in association law. In addition, Marty was a major force in the enactment of the Labeling of Hazardous Art Materials Act (LHAMA), a visionary Federal statute which married private organization standards-setting with Federal enforcement in a durable, efficient partnership which continues to this day

            A longtime member of the Port Washington Yacht Club, Marty enjoyed sailing and golfing, model-building and attending his grandchildrens’ sporting activities. He was a member of American Legion Post 304. A loyal son of Fordham, he enjoyed rooting for the Rams’ sports teams.

            Marty is survived by his wife, Dr. Susan Neville, and by his children Kerry Neville, Erin Colello and her husband Jon, Colin Neville and his wife Leslie, and eight adored grandchildren – Sophia, Alex, Meghan, Ryan, Maeve, Fiona, Luke and William.

Ralph C. Coti

1952-2016

Ralph Coti, who served as counsel to Neville Peterson LLP from 2000 through 2012, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A graduate of Columbia University and Columbia University’s School of Law, Ralph was a dedicated, meticulous and creative attorney who represented hundreds of clients in a broad array of commercial and international transactions spanning a brilliant 4-decade career. He viewed his clients as his partners in legal endeavors, and worked tirelessly to help them achieve their goals. As counsel to Neville Peterson LLP, he helped the firm’s attorneys master the relationships between international trade and commercial law. 

In addition to his legal work, Ralph devoted time to a number of civic and charitable organizations. He was a Director and Secretary of the Clover Foundation in New York, and served as President of the Managing Council for the Premio Esteban Campodonico, a distinguished prize issued annually by the Universidad de Piura in Lima, Peru, honoring outstanding service to Peruvian society.

Ralph is survived by his wife and son, and by colleagues at Neville Peterson LLP who will remember him fondly and miss him.

Neville Peterson LLP attorney Russell A. Semmel's article, No Reservations: A Proposal to Streamline Calendar Practice in the United States Court of International Trade, was published in the Spring 2015 issue of the Tulane Journal of International and Comparative Law. You can read the article here

The paper accompanied Russ' presentation at  the 2014 Court of International Trade Judicial Conference, where it was a topic of considerable discussion and lively debate.
